The great Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate was once called a genius by a famous critic. "Genius!" he snorted. "For 37 years I've practiced 14 hours a day, and now they call me a genius."

PRACTICE THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE SWING

Just as your house needs to have a good foundation to stand over the years, your golf swing needs a good foundation to stand up through 18 holes of golf.

The grip, stance, posture and aim are the foundations of the swing. Spending much of your practice time working on these pre-swing fundamentals will reap rewards many times over. You will start hitting the ball straighter and with more consistency with just a little bit of attention to your pre-swing setup.

In this video, Charlie King, director of instruction at Reynolds Golf Academy, shows the proper way to hold the club and the proper stance.

You can practice these fundamentals at home in your yard or even inside on a rainy day. You don't need to hit golf balls, so you can save time because you don't need to drive to the golf course or practice facility and you'll save money because you won't need to buy a bucket of practice balls. When you do spend time at the practice range hitting balls, be sure to set aside a little time to work on your grip, aim and stance/posture. When you're ready to start hitting balls, make sure you take several rehearsal swings to reinforce the skills you are working to improve. Remember, it is the quality of practice that's most important, not the quantity. You'll get more benefit hitting fewer balls if you're practicing the correct motions.

Good luck and happy practicing!
